Shifting Power in Global Health: Co-Creating Solutions with Communities
“How do we incorporate voices of impacted regions? Not as recipients of aid, but as co-creators of solutions and decision-makers, prioritising issues that are important for them.” Global Health Expert
The current global health research landscape is often criticised for being extractive and hierarchical. Countries from the Global South face disproportionate scrutiny for their health responses and are frequently sidelined in decision-making processes.
Research priorities are largely driven by Global North institutions, resulting in a ’10/90′ gap—where the majority of health research benefits a wealthier minority. This imbalance is further compounded by language barriers and historical economic inequalities, dismissing the South’s local knowledge as merely ‘localised’ rather than ‘scientific.’
Skating Panda recently partnered with a major global funder to challenge these imbalances and redefine how global health campaigns are conducted.
Our work revealed significant opportunities to reimagine global health campaigns by putting communities at the heart of decision-making. This collaboration has culminated in a clear and tailored approach to more inclusive and effective co-creation practices which truly reflect and address the needs of all communities, ensuring a more democratic and impactful approach to global health.
The need and appetite for change is undeniable. What we now need is leadership.
